Keeping is Safe and Legal

We’re so grateful that you have chosen to fundraise for Neuroblastoma UK! We want you to enjoy the experience, but it’s also essential to make sure your event is safe, legal, and well-organised. As the event organiser, you’re responsible for the wellbeing of everyone involved, but we’re always here to help if you need advice or guidance.

Raffles & Lotteries

Raffles are a great way to raise funds, but depending on how they’re run, you may need a license.

Incidental Lotteries

These raffles happen during a larger event (like a quiz night or bake sale). No license is needed if:

  • Tickets are sold and drawn on the same day, during the event

  • Tickets are sold only to people aged 16 and over

  • All tickets cost the same amount

  • You spend no more than £500 on prizes

If you want to sell tickets in advance, a local authority license may be required.

Small Society Lotteries

Planning a standalone raffle with ticket sales in advance? If you're raising under £20,000, you don’t need a Gambling Commission license but you do need to register with your local authority (costs around £40).

Raffle tickets must include:

  • The name of the charity: Neuroblastoma UK

  • The ticket price

  • The promoter’s name and address (this must not be Neuroblastoma UK)

  • The date of the draw

Public Collections

In Public Spaces

If you want to collect donations in a public place (like the high street), you’ll usually need a permit from your local council. You can find guidance on applying at www.gov.uk/street-collection-permit

On Private Property

Collecting at venues like supermarkets or train stations? You’ll need written permission from the property manager before you begin.

Let Us Know

If you're planning a collection, please get in touch. We can provide:

  • Collection buckets

  • A letter of authority

  • Helpful tips for collecting responsibly

Organising an Event

Planning your own fundraising event? Here's how to keep things running smoothly:

  • Food & Drink: Get food safety guidance at food.gov.uk

  • First Aid: Check resources from St John Ambulance or British Red Cross

  • Health & Safety: Visit hse.gov.uk

You may need a license for:

  • Public collections

  • Selling items in public

  • Serving alcohol

  • Providing food and drink

Insurance

If your event is open to the public, you’ll likely need Public Liability Insurance. Always check with your venue first, they may already be covered.

Data Protection

If you're collecting personal details (names, emails, etc.), you must comply with UK data protection laws. Learn more at the Information Commissioner’s Office.

Children & Fundraising

If your event involves children, whether they’re helping out or being photographed, make sure you have parental permission.

Handling Money Safely

To protect your fundraising efforts:

  • Always have two people count and record the money

  • Keep funds secure until they can be banked

  • Transfer donations to Neuroblastoma UK as soon as possible
